Superb Case for Korg “MicroKontrol” Keyboard from Advance Flight Case Enterprises
Not too long ago I received a heavy-duty flight case for my Korg Microkontrol controller keyboard. The Microkontrol is a small two octave USB controller with small keys and a large number of knobs, faders, touchpads and x/y joystick controller. I’ve managed to use the keyboard to write some synth parts and got started on using it to perform live material (in conjunction with Ableton Live!). Through a contact I was able to get my hands on a custom made case from a Hong Kong manufacturer called Advance Flight Case Enterprises. Here are my thoughts.
The case itself is quite beautiful. It is shiny, sturdy and attractive. I like the clasps that tighten up the case and I feel if I had to travel with the Korg that the keyboard would be in good shape if it were shipped in this case. I have a caveat though! The Korg doesn’t fit perfectly inside. It’s very close to perfection but the Korg will move a little in all directions. I have slipped my USB cable down the backside and placed a light sweater over the keys when I took it to a gig – just to be sure nothing would rattle about or get jarred inside.
My conclusion is that for a custom case, AFCE got it just about right. Where they went wrong was not that they made an error in sizing – they could have easily also made it a little too small which would have rendered the case useless! What I would suggest is that they might have shipped a few extra variations of the grey protective foam inside the empty case, along with some small glue packet or notes on how to achieve a perfect custom fit. Then the customer can tinker and get it just right!
